As I have listened to golf broadcasts over the years, I, like everyone else, have picked out the golf announcers I really like and those I absolutely hate.

I won’t mention the ones I hate (I’m not a negative person), but I absolutely loved Henry Longhurst and Peter Alliss. These gentlemen loved the game, and Peter was also a fantastic player. I walked the first 6 holes with him at Kensington Golf Club in 1966 or 67. He birdied all 6. I thought I would see someone shoot 59, but alas, he ran out of steam and finished with a 6 under 66!

Both had tremendous knowledge of the game and sprinkled their anecdotes throughout their broadcasts. Here is a sample of announcers, both good and bad, who have graced the airwaves.

LOVE them or hate them, you can’t ignore golf commentators and analysts. We often find ourselves screaming at the TV when they state the obvious, but we have also all had moments where we have thought: “I wish that I had said that.”

There are those who always seem to find the right words, and there are those who make us smile. Some even make us laugh out loud. Here, we give you a selection of some great one-liners, along with some terrific gaffes. Enjoy…

Peter Alliss

A player crossed himself before playing a bunker shot and then left the ball in the sand.

Alliss: “You can’t trust anyone these days. It’s like turning up to hear Pavarotti sing and finding out he has laryngitis.” – On Tiger Woods’ 81 in the third of The Open, Muirfield, 2002

“That beautiful woman lives with me – a Rottweiler with lip-gloss.” – As the camera pans around Muirfield, during The Open in 2013, Alliss spots his wife.

“He’s done it. Well, I tell you that a day’s golf doesn’t come better than this, and it’s not over yet.” – With Phil Mickelson leaping up and down on the 18th green at Augusta in the 2004 Masters, Alliss fails to realize that the putt he has just holed is to win – he thinks there is a playoff.

“What a corker” – in response to Tony Jacklin’s final drive in The Open, Royal Lytham, 1969

“Oh dear…” – when Doug Sanders bent down to remove an imaginary piece of grass before missing a two-foot putt to win The Open at St Andrews in 1970. Then followed with “And there but for the grace of God…”

Verne Lundquist

“Oh, my goodness… in your life have you seen anything like that?” – In response to Tiger Woods astonishing chip-in for birdie on the 16th hole, The Masters, 2005.

Commentating on Nick Faldo and his caddie Fanny Sunesson lining-up shots at the Scottish Open: “Some weeks Nick likes to use Fanny; other weeks he prefers to do it by himself.”

This one, at The Open at Muirfield in 2013, landed him in hot water: “This fairway runs like an Ethiopian chicken… it just runs.”
