There have been several players who have putted while looking at the hole. Johnny Miller won the Pebble Beach Pro-Am looking at the hole when he putted because he had the yips, and that was the only way he could putt without that deadly twitch.
The first time I ever saw this done was when Bobby Vervey, Gary Player’s brother-in-law, sank a 5 footer to win the 1991 Senior British Open.
When the late Dave Marr interviewed him after his round, he asked him if he knew that he looked at the hole and not at the ball for his final putt. He said, “Yes, I was so nervous. If I had looked at the ball, I would have missed it!” Jordan Spieth has turned this style of putting into an art form, sometimes looking at the ball and sometimes the hole. Maybe this is something you should try and see if it helps your putts. Thanks to pga.com for this video!
Jordan Spieth has a unique putting style on short putts, looking at the hole rather than the ball. PGA Professional Warren Bottke explains the strategy and technique.
