The Iconic Ping Putter turns 50 – What a success story!

The Ping Putter Range came out in South Africa in 1966 when I was an assistant pro at Royal Johannesburg Golf Club. I think it was the very first design 1-A which had two faces and made a resounding ‘ping’ when you struck the putt. I used that putter with varying success for several years. But the iconic Ping Anser made by Karsten Solheim in 1966 is credited for the huge success of the Ping Golf Company! To this day, each model that wins a professional event worldwide is gold plated and stored in a vault at Ping Headquarters. They must have quite a collection! The Ping Anser—perhaps the most iconic putter model of all time—turned 50 last week at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

It was at this same event in 1966 that Karsten Solheim first showed the club to tour players.
Getting the attention of George Archer, Kermit Zarley, and Gene Littler, who all soon put it in play. A Norwegian-born engineer who worked on jet fighters and missile-guidance systems after World War II, Solheim sketched the design on a 78 r.p.m. record jacket. As the Anser turns 50, the model continues to resonate with tour players and everyday golfers.
