Hitting the ground before the ball can be one of the most annoying shots in golf.  The ball goes nowhere, and you sometimes hurt your wrist in the process.  Mark Crossfield of  AskGolfGuru explains that attempting to hit up on the ball or starting the downswing with the arms instead of the lower body are two ways that this can occur.  Shift your weight correctly, and you can cure this dreaded shot!

Golf is a game of opposites — swing down to make the ball go up, swing easy to make the ball go far — so it’s easy to understand why beginners and amateurs have trouble trusting the shots they need to hit to succeed.

Mark Crossfield takes on one of these difficult teachings and explains how a player’s desire to get the ball up in the air could be the very reason they are laying the sod over the ball and chunking it. He offers up a simple drill that will force you to swing down onto the ball and eliminate hitting the ground before the golf ball.
