Pitching is a key aspect in lowering your scores quickly.  As I often say in my teaching, “I have never seen a good golfer who cannot pitch, and I have never seen a bad one who can!”  This shot separates the good golfers from the mediocre and will help you take your game to the next level.  Take a look at Piers Ward and Andy Proudman from Meandmygolf, and you will be pitching like a pro in no time!

Controlling the flight of the pitch shot between low, medium, and high is as simple as changing the shaft angle at address and maintaining that shaft angle through impact.  Become an excellent pitcher of the ball by working on these moves!

In today’s Impact Show we discuss how new Trackman 4 data has helped us understand how the best players in the world control the trajectory on their pitch shots. We look at the low, medium and high flying pitch shots, controlling dynamic loft is the key.

Putting is the one part of the game where the average golfers, with some concentrated practice, can be just as good with a putter in their hands as the very best on the PGA Tour! Of course, the average amateur golfer will never hit the ball as far as Jason Day.  However, as Ted Norby of the National University Golf Academy mentions in this instructional video, staying connected with your putting stroke will remove all unnecessary movement and start you on the correct path to putting greatness!

Learning to control your emotions on the first tee can be really difficult if you don’t have a clear idea of what you really want to do with the shot.  The use of a pre-shot routine, visualization, and a practice swing that exactly mimics the shot you want to play are all things you can do to ensure that the all-important first shot goes sailing down the middle of the fairway!  Thanks to  Mark Crossfield and Coach Lockey for sharing their insights on how to get rid of those first tee jitters!  Also, controlling your emotions on the golf course is another important aspect of playing consistent golf!

Correct knee action in the golf swing can make all the difference in your game.  Piers Ward and Andy Proudman of Meandmygolf explain how the real key is the left knee movement on both the backswing and the downswing.  Learn to stabilize the right shin on the backswing and then drive the left knee towards the target on the downswing to get you that extra power you have been looking for.  I was taught to imagine standing inside a barrel.  Keeps the hips inside the barrel on the backswing and burst through the barrel on the downswing!

In today’s Impact Show, we discuss the lower body in the golf swing and show you how three great ball strikers (Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus and Bubba Watson) use their lead leg throughout the swing. We look at some of the key ingredients to an effective leg work in the swing as we answer one of our follower’s questions.

And WRXers, don’t forget to get post your questions on what you would like to see us cover in our next Impact Show.

Hitting off the knees forces the swing to be a lot flatter!

The golf swing drill from Kelvin Kelley of Golf Wrx is perfect for those golfers whose golf swings are a little too steep on the backswing, causing them to come over the top and cut across the ball. Hitting a ball off your knees forces you to swing a lot flatter and gets you to use your core muscles to generate rotational power.  This will automatically create more clubhead speed resulting in more power in your golf swing.  This is not that hard to do once you get the hang of it.  I think it is more the embarrassment of being seen on the range doing this.  Find a secluded spot on the range or do this at home to start. You can even do this without a ball and still get the same benefits.

A drill for golfers with a backswing that is too steep!

Growing up in a small, rural town, I didn’t have access to a lot of instruction.  Nor was it easily available.  Sites like GolfWRX weren’t around at the time. Being fascinated with the golf swing at an early age, I had to rely on trial and error with my own swing, an old-school camera and the once-a-month Golf Digest issue.

Every month, I would scan that Golf Digest for tips from the best golfers and golf instructors in the world. The names changed, but the same old instruction was often given in the write ups. I would constantly try to mirror the images of what I saw, following the tips to gain more power and to be more consistent.

Then there was our PGA Teaching Professional at our local golf course. The 10th hole at our local muni had a creek running across the fairway, a good 230 yards out. Usually with a few spectators on hand, Tad would tee up a ball, place a towel on the ground and proceed to hit a driver from his knees, clearing the creek with ease. At first sight, it was simply hard to believe. Many bets were won with that swing.

Already being a student of the swing, this left me confused.

How could he create so much speed and power from that position? Everything I read told me that power came from a “big shoulder turn” on the backswing and “firing my hips” on the downswing.

At the time, I thought my local PGA pro had mastered a trick-shot. Now I realize that a ball off your knees, or just swinging from your knees, is the best drill for your golf swing and can instantly change your game.

Here’s why.

When you swing the club from your knees, it forces you to turn your upper body in the proper direction and maintain your spine angle. The best way to make contact is to fold up your right arm, which will pull your body into the proper coil position behind the ball. Simply folding up your right arm will pull your shoulders around, so a conscious, big shoulder turn is not necessary.

To a player who doesn’t turn in the proper direction, swinging from your knees will feel more around or level with the shoulders at first. “Tilters” as I call them, or players whose spines tend to move toward the target on their backswing.  They will not be able to make contact doing this drill. When they attempt this swing they will hit well behind the ball, and will have to adjust.

Swinging from your knees is also a great drill to produce speed, especially arm speed. Being down in this position will stabilize your body, getting rid of extra moving parts. Now you can generate shaft speed with your arms.

If you asked the average golfer the difference between static loft and dynamic loft, you would most probably get a blank stare.  Most golfers have never heard of these terms.  However, if you want to have a good and consistent putting stroke, you need to know how these two lofts affect the way your ball rolls.

Because the moment your ball starts off with backspin on a putt, your distance control is going to be compromised.

Thanks to Tom Stickney II of  Golf Wrx, you will now know the difference between these two lofts!

Is your putter custom fitted?

By now everyone has heard the benefits of getting your putter — and really, all of your clubs — custom fitted to your stroke/swing. However, many people over look loft when it comes to the putter. In fact, the putter’s loft at impact is one of the major factors involved in how the ball launches, and the ultimate roll on the surface.

But let’s stop for a second and understand that there are actually TWO different lofts within your putter; first, you have your static loft, which is the loft of the blade design.  This is the loft of the putter from the factory. Most of the putter today are between 3 to 4 degrees.

Second is the loft you deliver at impact that you control mostly by your hand action at the ball. You can either add or subtract loft.  We call this your dynamic loft.

What is the difference between Static and Dynamic Loft in your putting?

When you hit the ball with the correct amount of dynamic loft the ball will skid very little and begin to roll quickly, as pictured above. But when you hit the ball with too much added loft, you will see the ball jump up into the air, as pictured below.

What is the difference between Static and Dynamic Loft in your putting?

What is the difference between Static and Dynamic Loft in your putting?

The Putter in Action!

Here the static loft of the putter is 3 degrees.  But when the player hits this particular putt, the shaft is leaning forward 2.3 degrees.  Giving us a dynamic loft of 0.7 degrees at impact. That’s a far cry from the starting amount of 3 degrees at address.

Therefore, this player’s dynamics (hand action) during his stroke caused the putter to become de-lofted more than necessary. In fact, in a perfect world, we want to deliver the loft at a constant value that matches your stroke to make your putts more consistent.

To take your game up a notch, you need to know how to draw and fade the ball at will. These two invaluable shots can help you A) Get out of trouble when you need to curve the ball around an obstacle like a tree, and B) Hit the ball away from trouble off the tee. For example, if there is an out of bounds on the right-hand side, and you have the ability to hit a draw (right-handed golfers) to move the ball away from getting a potential penalty, you have just taken your game to the next level!  In conjunction with Callaway Golf, David Leadbetter shows you exactly how to learn to draw the ball at will. So, head to the range and try this out!

Alignment is the key: aim your body a little to the right, your club face (a little less) to the right, and “think draw” with your swing.

Getting your weight shifted from your back foot to your front as quickly as possible is one of the most important moves in the golf swing.

Doing it correctly is critical and is where most amateurs go wrong.  Moving the hips forward in a lateral motion can be achieved using an alignment stick placed upright in the ground an inch or so ahead of the lead foot.  Trying to get the hip to move into the stick gives the golfer the correct feel of this motion.  Thanks to Golf Step by StepJean Chua, LPGA player on the Symetra Tour, who gives you her take on this drill and how it has helped her game!

Many golfers try too hard to get the ball in the air. The most common way of going about this is by leaning back at impact as if to impart more loft on your clubs. Symetra Tour pro Jean Chua gives you a good drill to help you feel like you’re getting your weight to your lead side, which will help you compress the ball more, launching it higher by striking it more flush.
