This is a straightforward and simple drill to help golfers understand the correct hip motion at the start of the downswing.  There is always a slight lateral hip motion to allow the weight to shift from the back foot to the front before the hip rotation starts. But, as Lydia Ko explains, she had a habit of “spinning out,” which many golfers do.  This will cause the clubhead to travel across the ball, causing a hook or a slice depending on where the clubface is at impact. So the next time you are on the range, try this drill to give you a sensation you’ve probably never felt before!  Thanks to  of Golf Digest for this very educational article!

The spin-out can cause hooks or slices!

There’s something kind of nice about missing it left. At least you got through the ball. And if you can wrestle in your hook, you’re looking at a baby draw, right? But no matter what kind of solace you can find in your misses, it’s always hard to make par from the trees. If you struggle with hitting ugly pull-hooks, you’re not alone. Even Lydia Ko, the number one female player in the world, has had some trouble missing it left.

She’s diagnosed that miss as a hip-turn issue. Instead of making a good, smooth turn through the ball, she said her hips spin out sometimes. This closes the clubface at impact, sending the ball hard left.

To fix it, she does this little drill:

Hitting out of the thick rough is no fun, but if you know a couple of tricks like keeping the clubface open at address and taking a club with plenty of loft, you can at least be playing your next shot from the fairway.  The worst thing possible in golf is to follow a bad shot with another bad shot.  Sean Casey of Sean Casey Golf shows you exactly how to extricate yourself from this daunting shot!

Just like hitting from greenside bunkers and from behind trees, playing from the fescue is not an ideal situation, but one that you need to be prepared to play. Sean Casey gives you some tips to extricate yourself from that thick situation.

Do golf instructional videos work?  If you watch late-night TV, then the answer is yes.  You will get 30 extra yards if you buy this driver. You’ll get rid of your slice forever if you buy this DVD.  Well, folks, I’m here to tell you that if this was true, all PGA and LPGA players would get rid of their expensive coaches and be playing with that driver and watching those DVDs.  If you want to improve, go take lessons as all the top pros do.  And as Ben Hogan used to say, “Dig it out of the dirt!”  Thanks to Mel Sole Golf School for this informative video!

Golf Instructional DVDs have their place, but they aren’t a substitute for the personalized experience of in-person golf instruction.

While instructional DVDs can offer a good general overview of golf techniques, they simply can’t address every golfer’s unique needs, and that’s where golf instruction has a big edge. As Mel explains in this months video golf tip, he teaches differently to different players, customizing each lesson to his student’s strengths and weaknesses. A DVD just can’t do this. Mel also discusses biomechanics and a recent DVD TV commercial that promised extra yards and totally failed to deliver.

In this instructional video, Andy Proudman from MeandMyGolf demonstrates a perfect drill to start the backswing and then get the club on plane halfway through the backswing. I have always spoken about perception (what you feel) and reality (what you actually do.) Here Andy emphasizes feeling the club being a little more upright during the drill.  This helps to get the club perfectly on plane for your next swing with the ball!  Get yourself some alignment sticks and remember, this is something you can start working on at home!

A regular bunker shot is a difficult shot for many golfers, but a buried, uphill lie is a nightmare!  But don’t worry a bit.  Jeff Ritter of Make the Turn via Golf Digest helps you understand the technique needed to help extricate the ball safely onto the green and even get it close to the hole in some instances!

How hideous is this lie? There’s a good chance we’ll all be faced with it at some point: Ball buried in the bunker, under a lip. And while it looks like there’s no way to get a good stance or make any sort of solid contact, we have a few tips that can help you out.

Swing coach Jeff Ritter says that first and foremost, you need good balance for this shot. Take a wide stance, and put one foot out of the bunker and one foot in if necessary.

Practicing the pitch shot is the fastest way to lower your handicap in a hurry!  The two biggest keys have the correct set-up (this is an absolute must) and controlling the shot with your body rotation and not with the arms. First, initiate the downswing with a pulling motion of the left side and allow the right side to follow!

Learning to hit the short pitch shot can really help lower your scores.  In this video, Butch Harmon shows Touring Professional mark Smith exactly how to hit those 1/2 wedge shots crisply, allowing the ball to finish close to the hole. So head out to the range and put this shot into your game.  You won’t be sorry!

The rear leg, and in particular the lower part of the rear leg, is called the rear shin post.  This is a critical part of the backswing. It stabilizes the lower body movement, allows the body to coil correctly, and allows a strong “push off” at the start of the downswing to create maximum body rotation and speed.  An absolute must if you are looking to add distance!

Piers Ward and Andy Proudman of Meandmygolf do a great job here using BodiTrak, a pressure mat, to show how swaying and allowing the weight to roll to the outside of the rear foot will hurt your ball striking.  They give a simple use of a coin to help resolve and stabilize the rear shin post to cure this problem.

PGA Professionals Piers Ward and Andy Proudman of Meandmygolf discuss whether swaying in your back swing is ok or not in this weeks Impact Show. They use Boditrak to show the weight shift in the golf swing and use a 50 pence piece to achieve better footwork and help improve your ball striking.

Piers Ward from Meandmygolf mentions that he saw a video on youtube where a top PGA Tour player stated that he started his downswing by pulling down with his arms.  Folks, remember what I have always said: “There are perceptions and reality!”  The real data gained from devices like BodiTrak and FlightScope prove without a shadow of a doubt that the downswing starts using the ground as a force to move the body in a forward direction to get the weight from the back foot to the front foot! Enjoy this informative video on how to start the downswing in the correct sequence!
