What influences Posture?

Golf Chats.com is a website to encourage discussions on various subjects relating to the game of golf. I am Mel Sole, and SAPGA Master Professional. Most of the time, I teach at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club.  I teach at Holiday Valley Resort in Ellicottville, NY, and occasionally at Sea Trail Resort at Sunset Beach in NC during June and July.  Most of the teaching at this location is done by my long-time instructor David Olberding.

Today’s subject is posture.

I see hundreds of different postures, not only amongst amateurs but also among the pros.  Not so much now, as the gyms and fitness coaches have put most PGA professionals in great shape.  But not so many of the older amateur golfers who were businessmen and now have become golf enthusiasts and are looking for ideas (and miracles) to improve their golf game.

Because we all have different physiques, arm lengths, and leg lengths, there had to be a better way of always getting into the correct posture for each golfer – and there is!

Mike Adams:

Mike is one of the leading teachers in the US and is in the Teachers Hall of Fame because of his work with biomechanics.  This is his way of getting the correct posture for each individual golfer.

  1. Bend forward with slightly bent knees and place your palms flat on your thighs.
  2. Put the index finger of each hand on the top of the kneecap.
  3. Now, relax your arms (keeping the posture) and let them hang loosely.  They should hang at 90 degrees to your shoulders.
  4. Place your hands together without moving the arms forward or back. (no matter how weird it may feel in the beginning)
  5. Place a club in your hands (again without moving the arms towards or away from your body)
  6. This is the correct posture for you.  Practice this at home until it starts feeling comfortable.

Another factor that can influence posture is Club length.

Make sure you go to a certified clubfitter and check that your club length and lie angles are correct for you in your new posture.

I have always said that if a golfer is serious about their golf game, there are 4 things they should always carry in their golf bag.

1. At least 2 alignment sticks.

2. An Orange Whip. (Topic of a future post, stay tuned.)

3. A Range Finder.

4. A Putting Mirror.

Rickie never tees off without first doing some putting work with the mirror!

Check out this video below, a routine Rickie Fowler does each and every time before he goes out to play.  Most PGA Tour Players use training aids to help them with their game. EyeLine Golf tells me that 18 of the Top 20 PGA Tour players are currently using this device. Shouldn’t you have one in your bag? And practice with it before you go out to play?

When I ask my students how often they practice, the answer usually is “Not as often as I should.”

Work, kids, and household chores often get in the way of getting to the range.  Now you can walk out your back door and get some backyard practice on your short game, which by the way, is still the best way to lower your scores.  Thanks to golfstinks.com for introducing us to the interesting training aid!

This is a great tool for improving your short game at home!

How cool is it to be able to work on your short game at home? Whether you are an avid golfer, weekend hack or an I-play-once-a-year-at-a-tournament-to-get-drunk participant, we got something for you. Part of enjoying the game is playing it and having a decent round, right? And how do you go about shooting a decent round…practice!

So, the kind people at Rukket Sports were gracious enough to send us their Chipping Net and Range Marker. This is the sort of thing every golfer at every level should have. As long as you have a little space in your yard to chip, you’re good to go. Not to mention it is well constructed, priced right and folds up for easy storage.

As seen in the photo above, the net serves as a…you guessed it, chipping target. Let’s say you want to work on shorter irons. No problem, flip this bad boy over and voila, it’s a range marker that can mark 50, 100 or 150 yards. A perfect gift for the old man with Father’s Day just around the corner.

I am a great believer in teaching aids.

I think the golfer needs feedback when practicing to know whether they are making the correct move.

In fact, my definition of practice is “Focused Repetition with Feedback.”

For those golfers who do not have a lot of time to go to the range, I always tell my students to swing a club at home.  Now with this teaching aid, you can not only swing a club at home, but it will tell you exactly where you are hitting the ball on the clubface.  For those of you who are stuck indoors in the winter, now you have something that will actually improve your impact by the time spring comes around!

As an instructor who teaches golfers from beginners to Tour Players, I sometimes have to find a way to get my students to “feel” what it is I’m trying to get him/her to accomplish.

As I’ve always said, “There is perception, and then there is reality”  Those two things are VERY different.  The way I get these students to accomplish the move they are looking for I use training aids.  I am a great believer in training aids, and here is my definition of practice.  “Focused repetition with feedback.”

1. Focused.

You are focusing on one thing and one thing only.  Whether it is keeping your arm straight, weight shift, or balance, you should not be trying to work on more than one thing at a time.

2. Repetition.

Doing the task over and over again to make it a habit

3. With Feedback.

How do you know if you are doing it correctly?  With a training aid designed specifically for the fault or move you are working on, you will get feedback (even if you don’t like the feedback you get at first)

Here are my Top 3 Training Aids and why I use them.

1. Arm Tac-Tic – My most used training aid.  Really helps students who have trouble getting rid of the dreaded “chicken wing.”

2.  Putting Mirror.  A “must-have” training aid.  This will help you achieve two of the most important aspects of putting that 90% of good putters have.  Eyes over the ball and shoulders square to the intended line!

3. Swing Gyde – This training aid is for the golfers who do not swing the club back “on plane” Put the club “in the slot” every time with this training aid.
