If you remember, last year Sports Illustrated featured a poll that asked, “Who was the most overrated golf on Tour?”

The two most popular answers were Rickie Fowler and Ian Poulter.  Rickie immediately stepped up to the plate and produced a string of victories throughout the world, including the Players Championship and the Scottish Open, to immediately silence the critics.  Ian has had a “fair” year but has not won as much as Rickie, so the verdict is still out on him!  This year the two biggest questions are “Will Tiger win again?” and “Who would you want by your side in a bar fight!”  It seems Ernie Els fits the second question quite well!  Thanks to Golf Step by Step and Sports Illustrated for this fun poll!

Sports Illustrated released their annual Anonymous Player Poll on Tuesday, but there wasn’t much Rickie Fowler-esque motivation to be gleaned from the 150 players’ answers. Last year, Fowler and Ian Poulter were pegged as the leading vote getters as to who were believed to be the most overrated players on Tour.

SI interviewed more than 150 players from the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions and LPGA Tour.

Here are some of the most interesting responses.

I once read that Rod Laver, legendary Australian tennis star, said that Jack Nicklaus could have been a world-class tennis star if he had not decided to pursue golf!

For example, there have been many multi-sport athletes, Deon Sanders and Bo Jackson,  who excelled at both baseball and football at the highest level.

I was fortunate to work with a gentleman named Bob Cunningham in my days of running the Canadian Golf Academy.  Bob won the Grey Cup (Canada’s version of the Super Bowl) and won a Canadian PGA Championship.  Not too many people can say that!

Bleacher Report brings us PGA Tour players who would have been stars in other sports.

The PGA Tour is full of golfers who enjoy playing other sports when they’re not preparing for the next major championship or FedEx Cup event.

Some, such as Jack Nicklaus, were happy to unwind with their athletic hobbies during their downtime. Others, such as Anthony Kim, seem to have been torn between their current profession and other sports that captured their interest from a young age.

From Dustin Johnson dunking basketballs and Sergio Garcia taking penalties, to Hale Irwin lettering in football and Rickie Fowler jumping dunes in motocross, this list features an array of PGA regulars who not only embraced other sports, but also were potentially good enough to have gone pro in them.

With that in mind, let’s dive in and posit on alternate realities where some of our golfing icons may have been heroes in other sports.

9 golfers who could have been stars in other sports!

According to Ernie Els’ official website, the South African was a promising multi-sport athlete in his youth:

“As a youngster, he was outstanding in cricket, rugby and tennis. At the age of 13 he won a significant regional tennis event, the Eastern Transvaal Junior Championships.”

Relatively early on, though, Els (obviously) switched over to golf. Just one year after that tennis triumph, he won the World Junior Golf Championship in San Diego by defeating a young Phil Mickelson, among others.

Els began competing against professional golfers at age 16 and eventually turned pro in 1989. The rest—70 victories, including four major championships—is history.

Could the South African have gone pro in a sport other than golf? It’s difficult to tell, considering he was so young at the time, but his early success gives us reason to believe.

As a teenager learning the game of golf, I always wanted to have one of the prettiest swings around!  I would get home from school and stand in the back yard and swing for hours trying to emulate Gary Player, who was my idol growing up!  Those hours of swinging stood me in good stead through the years.

DEREK CLEMENTS of Swing by Swing features golfers considered to have pretty swings.  I don’t agree with all of them, but what do you think?  Post your comments below!

There are endless arguments and discussions about who possesses the best swing in golf. In truth, it’s all in the eye of the beholder and a gorgeous technique does not guarantee success. But the criteria for making this list is that the swings we feature are all things of beauty (with one exception). You will note that Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Seve Ballesteros do not feature, despite accumulating 53 majors between them, and that is because none of them fit or fitted the criteria – which just goes to show that if you have enough talent, it doesn’t matter what it looks like. ##Fred Couples

11 of the Prettiest Swings in Golf - #2 is my favorite!

The American has an incredibly strong left-hand grip, and he drops the club at the top of his backswing (no, not literally!) So why does he feature in a list of great golf swings? If you have ever seen him hit a golf ball, you know the answer to that question.

Louis Oosthuizen

11 of the Prettiest Swings in Golf - #2 is my favorite!

It defies belief that the South African has yet to add to his solitary major title. When he won The Open at St Andrews in 2010 he was in a league by himself – and it could be argued that his swing has improved since then. A great golf swing is one that ordinary people can aspire to, and there are no kinks to Oosthuizen’s action.

Ernie Els’s swing, aka “The Big Easy,” has been called the smoothest swing in golf!

I don’t think anyone would argue with that statement.  Michelle Wie is also not called the ‘Big Wiezie” for nothing.  She also has a beautiful easy swing.  When you put these two swings side by side as progolfswingvideos.com has done, it is amazing how similar they really are.  Watching two of the best swings in golf is watching pure poetry in motion!

Have you ever hit a shot and knew it was perfect the moment it came off the clubface.

Not only did Thomas Bjorn know that, in his match on the 14th hole of the second round of the 2003 World Match Play Championship, but Ernie Els, his opponent, knew as well.  “That was a perfect shot,” said Ernie as the ball came off the clubface.  And how right he was!

These are the richest golfers of 2015!

As you will see, the richest are not necessarily the best golfers in 2015, but their stellar careers allow them to continue earning at a prolific rate well after their great careers are over.  Off-course endorsement makes up the bulk of the 50 and over set.  We all know that Tiger Woods is #1 in earnings because of his off-course endorsements, so even though his golf game is on the wane right now, his earnings potential still leaves him on top.  However, the biggest surprise to me at #7 was Gary Player, who earned more money than the #5 player in the world rankings, Adam Scott!

Here is Sporteology.com report on the top 10 richest golfers in 2015!

Golf is widely reckoned as one of the highest paying sports in the intact universe. As a typical myth, golf is also a game for the rich people. Other famous players who are involved in the PGA and European tours are also counted as the highest paid athletes. The golfers earn huge amounts of money from their endorsements and sponsors, besides which, they also get a decent amount as their winning income from various tours. Ernie Els is not called “The Big Easy” for nothing.  He has a fluid syrupy swing that looks like he has all day to get the clubface back to the ball.

However, Ernie has also had swing problems from time to time, and here he talks about two of them.  Ball position and making sure to complete the backswing.  I could sit and watch this video all day!
