Dustin Johnson is the longest, straight hitter on the PGA Tour.  He accomplishes this with a combination of these things: a powerful and flexible body, a wider stance that tilts the spine angle slightly back, and a slightly open stance to help cut across the ball slightly, giving him a very powerful baby fade!  Today, Piers Ward and Andy Proudman of Meandmygolf talk to Dustin and find out the secrets of the long ball!

In this week’s Impact Show PGA Professionals Andy Proudman and Piers Ward Interview world number 3 Dustin Johnson about how he smashes his driver. During the video Dustin gives some useful advice to anyone looking to get that extra distance off the tee and how he hits the ball over 300 yards.

The fairway bunker shot is one of the easier shots for the PGA and LPGA Tour player, and yet, the average player seems to struggle with this shot.  Ian Poulter, European Tour winner and Ryder Cup player, explains the art of this shot. The keys are getting a good footing,  choosing the correct club, and hitting the ball first.   Thanks to Ian and Golf Monthly for sharing this informative video!

There is no specific way to set the wrists on the backswing.  Johnny Miller and Hubert Green set their wrists very early on the backswing.  Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods have almost no wrist cock until their backswing passes hip height.  Piers Ward and Andy Proudman of Meandmygolf give an excellent explanation of the various options available to you.

In today’s Impact Show, we talk about when and how to set your wrists in the backswing. We also share our preferences and ideas on how to set the wrists, although there is no one way to do it.

A full should turn is part and parcel of the “power package” in the golf swing.  But, as Chuck Quinton of Rotary Swing.com (why he does not introduce himself at the beginning of the video is a mystery to me) shows us, a poor shoulder turn is the product of trying to start the backswing with the lead side.  By using the trailing side, you have a much better chance of making a full shoulder turn.  Work on this on the range before you try it on the course to get comfortable changing the sequence pattern of your golf swing.

Now that you know you can make a full shoulder turn, it’s time to add some POWER back into your golf swing!

Do you have the tendency to hit the ball both ways?  Sometimes you hit it to the right and sometimes to the left?  The problem here is you then don’t know where to aim.  Chris Ryan of ChrisRyanGolf at the Belfry Golf Club in Wishaw, Warwickshire, England, close to Birmingham, explains why a lack of center hits.  He also explains how using a can of foot spray can lead to straighter shots!  Check it out.

Hitting the centre of the driver face is so crucial to long straight tee shots. Here Chris Ryan explains exactly why this is the case and how you can establish what your strike pattern is.

Pitching is a key aspect in lowering your scores quickly.  As I often say in my teaching, “I have never seen a good golfer who cannot pitch, and I have never seen a bad one who can!”  This shot separates the good golfers from the mediocre and will help you take your game to the next level.  Take a look at Piers Ward and Andy Proudman from Meandmygolf, and you will be pitching like a pro in no time!

Controlling the flight of the pitch shot between low, medium, and high is as simple as changing the shaft angle at address and maintaining that shaft angle through impact.  Become an excellent pitcher of the ball by working on these moves!

In today’s Impact Show we discuss how new Trackman 4 data has helped us understand how the best players in the world control the trajectory on their pitch shots. We look at the low, medium and high flying pitch shots, controlling dynamic loft is the key.

Putting is the one part of the game where the average golfers, with some concentrated practice, can be just as good with a putter in their hands as the very best on the PGA Tour! Of course, the average amateur golfer will never hit the ball as far as Jason Day.  However, as Ted Norby of the National University Golf Academy mentions in this instructional video, staying connected with your putting stroke will remove all unnecessary movement and start you on the correct path to putting greatness!

Learning to control your emotions on the first tee can be really difficult if you don’t have a clear idea of what you really want to do with the shot.  The use of a pre-shot routine, visualization, and a practice swing that exactly mimics the shot you want to play are all things you can do to ensure that the all-important first shot goes sailing down the middle of the fairway!  Thanks to  Mark Crossfield and Coach Lockey for sharing their insights on how to get rid of those first tee jitters!  Also, controlling your emotions on the golf course is another important aspect of playing consistent golf!
