There are times when you find your ball on a cart path, and even though you are entitled to a free drop, it makes more sense to play it.

For example, if the grass is really thick around the cart path or your line of sight might be hindered by taking a drop.  That is the time to play the shot.

There are a few things to take into consideration before playing, so watch this video of Kevin Na playing from the cart path at the Players Championship, and then read below for the things to do to make this shot easier.

OK, did you notice that Kevin gripped down on the club at least 2 inches!  That is rule #1.  By gripping shorter you are less likely to jam the club into the concrete!  #2 is not as noticeable, but if you watch his practice swing you will notice that he is feeling a slightly “flatter” swing.  This will help bring the clubhead into the ball with a slightly shallower path, again preventing violent contact with the path!

The next time you find your ball on a cart path, don’t automatically take a drop.  Check out your options and if hitting the ball off a cart path makes more sense then go ahead and play it!
