The backswing puts your body in a good position to start the downswing. That is the main reason why it is not necessary to have a fast backswing. The faster you swing, the more difficult it is to get to the top of the backswing consistently. On the downswing, the sequence of moving body parts and their direction is critical. Piers Ward and Andy Proudman of Meandmygolf do an excellent job of showing you exactly what you need to do to achieve this.
