Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is the golf capital of the world!  So, to get an opportunity to visit is always fun.  But to compete in the biggest worldwide tournament and actually have a chance to win is an absolute must!

Do you know why these golfers are excited?

Do you want to play in the Biggest Amateur Tournament Ever?

They’re having the time of their lives at what I believe to be one of the “most fun” and “best value” golf experiences on the planet.

I’m talking about the Myrtle Beach World Amateur, coming up from August 29 through September 2.

Do you want to play in the Biggest Amateur Tournament Ever?

A Golf Tournament?!

Yes, a golf tournament.

But not just any golf tournament.

Now in its 33rd year, the Myrtle Beach World Amateur is the largest amateur golf tournament in the world.

Last year, more than 3,400 players descended on “Golftown, U.S.A.” for a week full of golf, camaraderie…and a whole lotta fun.

In fact, it’s more like a 4-round golf vacation with a little friendly competition thrown in.

And as a Golf Vacation Insider reader, you can get a sweet discount on what is already a super rate to play in this amazing, bucket-list event.

More on that in a minute.

First, let me explain why the “World Am” is so insanely popular.

Do you want to play in the Biggest Amateur Tournament Ever?

A Fun Event You Might Actually Win…

We all know winning isn’t everything, but boy is it nice to have a real shot at it once in a while.

Well, the World Am is a handicapped event, so no matter your skill level, you will play in one of more than 60 flights (groups) against players of similar skill.

How similar?

Well, last year, there was an entire flight (48 golfers) made up entirely of those with handicap indexes of 12.4 to 12.6.

And if you’re concerned about sandbaggers ruining your chances to win fair and square…don’t be.

The World Am’s tournament staff has decades of experience ferreting out cheaters and they are not shy about disqualifying anyone trying to game the system.

Bottom line, you’ll be competing against players of similar skill and age…

The tournament divides flights into 49-and-under, 50-to-59, 60-to-69 and 70-and-over for men. There are multiple women’s flights, too.

By the way, the World Am has a Gross Division for more experienced players who want to compete “straight-up” against their peers.

I played in the gross division in 2014, and it was an absolute blast.

Play on Some of Myrtle Beach’s Best Golf Courses…in their Best Condition All Year

Because of the sheer size of the World Am, the tournament uses more than 60 of the Myrtle Beach area’s wonderful golf courses.

These have included some Golfweek-ranked beauties…

  • Barefoot Resort, Dye (ranked 13th)
  • Caledonia (ranked 5th)
  • Grande Dunes – Resort Club (ranked 15th)
  • Heritage (ranked 14th)
  • Legends, Moorland (ranked 12th)
  • Tidewater (ranked 7th)
  • TPC Myrtle Beach (ranked 11th)
  • True Blue Golf Plantation (ranked 6th)

You’ll play a different course each day, giving you a true feel for the awesomeness of Myrtle Beach as a golf destination.

And, in an effort to “show off” for tournament participants, the greenkeepers at all the courses strive to get them in absolute peak summer condition, giving every round a real “tournament feel.”

But don’t worry — tees are set up at appropriate distances for all, and plenty of gross and net birdies and eagles are made during the week.

Here is your definitive list of great Myrtle Beach golf courses to play this fall!

Myrtle Beach is the so-called “Golf Capital of the World” with over 100 golf courses in a stretch of 60 miles of the South Carolina Coast!  The hotels are reasonably priced, the restaurants offer everything from family fare to fine dining, take your pick.  I am proud to say that my Myrtle Beach golf school site is hosted by one of my favorite Myrtle Beach course, Pawleys Plantation.  Check it out here. Bring your buddies and have a great time in Myrtle Beach this fall!

Myrtle Beach Golf Insider has been guiding golfers to the best courses, the top golf schools, and highest rated restaurants for decades.

You can pick up their publication at most courses and at all of the golf shops on the Grand Strand in South Carolina. Easiest access to this terrific guide can be found atwww.mbgolfinsider.com.

Recently, the web site polled 27,000 golfers as to how they’d rate a course for quality of fairways, greens, tee boxes, clubhouse, shop, grill and overall staff interaction.

The overall winner is the Grande Dunes Resort Course, a Roger Rulewich design.

Grand Dunes 18th.

Tradition Golf Club in Pawleys Island SC and Tidewater came in second and third, respectively.

To see which 2 Grand Strand courses filled out the Top 5 for Fall of 2015, take a peek at this article provided by mbn.com:

Courses from North Myrtle Beach to Pawleys Island are among the “hottest”-trending courses in Myrtle Beach golf, according to the most recent reviews submitted by visiting golfers at the Myrtle Beach Golf Insider.

The Web site, which boasts more than 27,000 golfer reviews of 74 golf courses along the Grand Strand, gives reviewers the opportunity to rate the courses they’ve played in each of six categories, on a scale of 1 to 10: fairways, greens, tee boxes, clubhouse shop, grill and overall staff interaction. Based on these criteria, the following courses showed the most significant gains in their 10 most recent reviews as of Aug. 27, 2015:

Course Overall Ranking Last 10 Reviews Change
Grande Dunes Resort Club 8.1 9.1 1.0
Tradition Club 8.4 9.3 0.9
Tidewater 8.4 9.1 0.7
SouthCreek at Myrtle Beach National  8.6 9.1 0.5
Willbrook Plantation 8.1 8.6 0.5

2014 co-host of the PGA Professional National Championship was Grande Dunes Resort Club

On the heels of its status as a 2014 co-host of the PGA Professional National Championship, Grande Dunes Resort Club’s Roger Rulewich design was the destination of choice for the Carolinas PGA to host its 2015 Section Championship in July. Golfers noted superior conditioning in the weeks surrounding that event as contributing factors to their ratings bump.

Tradition Club rode a wave of good course conditions and high customer service marks, while Tidewater’s recently renovated greens drew high praise in several recent reviews. SouthCreek at Myrtle Beach National reviewers noted exceptional value and good pace of play, while scenery and “southern plantation charm” ruled the day for many of Willbrook Plantation’s reviewers.

Golf Chats is a website to encourage discussions on various subjects relating to the game of golf. 1. Start with reputation.

Ask other golfers to recommend an academy, or find schools online rated highly by the golf industry and feature positive customer reviews.  Check out tripadvisor.com for accurate reviews and not the biased reviews on the school’s website.

2. Check out the teachers at each facility.

Are they PGA, LPGA, or graduates of an accredited golf career program? Do they have a minimum of 5 full years of teaching experience with all skill levels? Does the Director of Instruction have “Top Teacher” status with GOLF Magazine and Golf Digest?

7 things to look at before choosing a golf school - #2 is the most important!

Top Teachers are a necessary part of a Top Golf School

3. How’s the Teaching Facility?

Is there a private learning area on the practice range for golf school students only? Do students have a putting green, bunker, and chipping area? Classrooms with video analysis access, restrooms, and a chance to enjoy a little air conditioning, when needed, also indicate a quality facility.

4. Class size is essential.

Each class should contain no more than 4 students to ensure plenty of personal attention. Ideally, one Instructor only should lead the class through all aspects of the game. This promotes continuity and rapport that is disrupted when a golfer meets a new teacher for each part of the game.

5. Teaching Philosophy.

Ask if a specific instruction method is taught that requires the golfer to completely reconstruct his/her swing. Or, do they assess each golfer’s unique capabilities and then build on the strength of the existing swing through sound fundamentals?

6. What technology does the academy use?

Computerized video analysis with split-screen imaging for swing comparisons is a must for the student to see and understand the improvement process. Check if clubfitting is available – many golfers are still playing with clubs that don’t fit them, and good teachers will provide help with that.

7 things to look at before choosing a golf school - #2 is the most important!

The latest technology is an important aspect of teaching the game.

7. Affordability.

Check rates for 3-day programs for the Top 25 Golf Schools in America online. The majority charge $1200 and upwards, but a few feature rates of only half that cost. Ask if KIDS LEARN FREE when accompanied by a paying adult. Top-notch instruction should be within reach of every golfer, and we will grow the game this way.
