Amateurs golfers who play public courses get different sand all the time.

Sometimes it is as hard as a rock, and sometimes (if you’re lucky), you get nice fluffy sand.  The problem is understanding the different techniques that go along with hard and soft sand. Tour representatives of HopkinsGolf,  Wayne Levi, and Dan Pohl give us the secrets to playing out of different sand conditions!

One of the reasons you dig your feet into the sand before you play your sand shot is to feel the sand’s texture.  This is the legal way of testing the consistency of the sand.

When you land in a bunker, you shouldn’t always follow the same routine. Because sand can change depending on the course and weather, it’s important to understand how to get yourself out.   Here are some tips on taking advantage of the situation.

Unless you’re playing the PGA Tour, you’re likely playing courses with bunkers that have varying textures of sand, from hard pan to soft and fluffy.

Learning how to manage these tricky situations is critical to lowering your scores.

Last year, Mel Sole shared three pro tips for playing out of hardened bunkers. As mentioned, the approach for playing hardened bunkers versus soft bunkers is quite different. On location in Mexico, Mel explains the key to successful shots out of soft, fluffy sand in this month’s video golf tip. Watch now!

Last year when I filmed my tip about playing out of bunkers with hard sand, the practice bunker was perfect for that tip.  The type of bunker a lot of golfers who lay at municipal courses face.  This year the club had a surprise for me.  They had redone the bunker, and the bunker now had soft, white sand, just like the golf course.  I took advantage of that!  So flow along as I explain the technique and the use of the correct equipment as well!
