Golf Movies and their Quotes – Your Favorite Please!
If you love golf and you love movies, then this post is for you! Great lines from great golf movies. Of course, we all know who will get the #1 spot, but it is fun to go through the others and remember when you saw these movies. I personally absolutely loved “The Legend of Bagger Vance” and “The Greatest Game Ever Played” I have seen both these movies. Other than Caddyshack,” what is your favorite golf movie and what is your favorite quote?
Golf is a serious sport? Tell that to Hollywood. These golf movie quotes show how much fun movie makers have with the game of golf. Here are some of our favorite lines. (Warning: some clips may contain inappropriate language)
10. I Love You, Man: “This is my nightmare.”
Sydney (Jason Segel) takes one off the shin while trying to help Hailey (Sarah Burns) with her game. His reaction is one we could all relate to.
9. Sideways: “Oops, look out.”
Miles (Paul Giamatti) sarcastically warns another group as he hits their errant shot back at them in Sideways. It’s the fantasy of every golfer who’s ever been hit into—although Miles probably deserved it at the rate he was playing.

8. Swingers: “Dead heat after one hole. This is turning into quite a rivalry.”
Mike (Jon Favreau) and Rob (Ron Livingston) play some hilariously bad shots on an L.A. par-3 course in Swingers, each carding an 8 on the first hole. Watch this scene to learn how NOT to hit a pitch shot. Or a sand shot. Or a 12-foot putt.

7. Caddyshack: “Gambling is illegal at Bushwood sir, and I never slice.”
Judge Smails (Ted Knight) dooms himself to a certain slice as the snobs take on the slobs in the classic Caddyshack.

6. Seven Days in Utopia: “See it. Feel it. Trust it.”
Johnny Crawford (Robert Duvall) teaches wayward pro Luke Chisolm (Lucas Black) a simple mantra for hitting the perfect golf shot in Seven Days in Utopia.

I have always had the greatest respect for Peter Kostis, and his PGA Tour commentary is always on point.
His great insight in both golf instruction and the PGA Tour makes him an enjoyable announcer to listen to. Kostis is a breath of fresh air compared to announcers who love the sound of their own voice and never shut up! So it comes as no surprise that Peter has some ideas on how the PGA Tour would fare even better. With PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem retiring soon, here are Peter’s ideas brought to you by Swing by Swing!
Peter Kostis
If all goes according to plan, Tim Finchem will likely be retiring as PGA Tour commissioner at the end of the 2016 season and all indications say he will be succeeded Jay Monahan.
Finchem has held the commish post since 1994. Since then, the game has changed dramatically. While you can credit Tiger Woods for a decent portion of golf’s transformation, Finchem’s accomplishments can’t be overlooked (see: TV Deals).
In a recent Golf.com article written by CBS analyst and instructor Peter Kostis, he offers up three pieces of advice on how the next commissioner can improve the game. The catch is that these relatively simple ideas will likely never happen.
Shorten the season
The golf season should extend from early January to Labor Day weekend. Period. That would give us 30 to 35 events per year, which is plenty. This sort of compact schedule would more often draw the very best players. And besides, why fight an unwinnable ratings battle with the NFL? Golf can’t compete with football, and the FedEx Cup playoffs deserve a showcase without interference from the NFL.
Fall Series Events.
As for the so-called Fall Series events, I have a solution: Incorporate them into qualifying tournaments and the Web.com season. That way, smaller events that can’t afford the PGA Tour premium price can enhance their fields and visibility. The most important rationale behind my short-season suggestion, though, is protecting players. Tour pros need an offseason to rest and recover, and to work on improving technique. No other major pro sport competes 12 months a year. Plus, fans would anticipate and get excited for the start of the season! It’s just not the same when things kick off in October, a week after the FedEx Cup concludes at the Tour Championship.
Add yards by just hitting the ball in the center of the clubface!

Did you know that for every 1″ you hit the ball off-center, you lose 10 yards?
So if you could consistently hit the ball off the center of the clubface, you would be hitting the ball at your maximum distance on every hole. How do you ensure that you hit the ball off the clubface center every time and add yards to your drive? Hank Haney gives a straightforward drill to either do at the range or even in your backyard without a ball. Controlling exactly where the clubhead is in space as you enter the hitting area is key. Thanks to Step by Step and Hank Haney Golf for sharing this interesting video!
We all aspire to having complete control over our golf ball. Whichever way a certain hole sets up, it would be ideal to be able to work the ball to fit its shape. However, in order to have that control we must first start with solid contact. Too often amateurs work so hard on making the correct swing only to be let down by the lack of proper contact.
Hank Haney says you should incorporate a drill that you usually see on the putting green into your range session to find the middle of the clubface with your driver every time.
The wives of the members of Muirfield don’t want to be members!

There has been a lot said over the past week about Muirfield announcing that they would not allow ladies to be club members. The R&A reprimand was swift and punishing, and they removed Muirfield from the British Open Rota. But there is more to the story than meets the eye. (As there always is.) and former European Tour member and renowned TV analyst Peter Alliss give us what the lady members at Muirfield think. Check out the link below from Swing by Swing.
Speaking with BBC Radio 5 Live, veteran golf commentator Peter Alliss stoked the flames a bit more with a suggestion for women who wish to play at Muirfield. The Guardian has the details:
Alliss, one of the most distinctive voices in golf, told BBC Radio 5 Live: “The women who are there as wives of husbands, they get all the facilities.
“I believe clubs were formed years ago by people of like spirit: doctors, lawyers, accountants, bakers, butchers, whatever they like. And they joined in like spirit to talk amongst them and to do whatever. I want to join the WVS [Women’s Voluntary Service] but unless I have a few bits and pieces nipped away on my body I’m not going to be able to get in.”

Back in the ’60s and 70’s golfers could use golf as a deduction for business purposes. Even club memberships were a deduction. If the rumor that golf will be considered a deduction once again, this will be HUGE, as the Donald would say. Tax breaks on golf will definitely give golf in the USA a boost that is really needed! Thanks to Swing by Swing for this breaking story!
Trump, on one of his many rounds of golf, plays year-round!
One of the biggest knocks on golf is that it is simply too expensive. The game can put a serious dent in your checking account, from the cost of equipment to the greens fees for a round of golf.
One of the Oddest Rules questions ever asked of the PGA Tour!

Jordan Spieth Question on the rules.
Recently Jordan Spieth stumped the PGA Tour officials with a rules question, asking if he could wet the bottom of his putter to gain better traction on really smooth greens where his putter tended to slip. This was a question the PGA Tour had never been asked before, so erring on the side of caution, they asked Jordan to refrain from doing this until they got an official ruling from either the USGA or the R&A, the two ruling bodies that determine the rules of the game. He recently got his answer. Thanks to Chris Chaney from Swing by Swing for this report!
What was the question?
The greens on the PGA Tour can get rolling pretty quickly. For Jordan Spieth and his trusty rusty Scotty Cameron 009 Prototype putter, that slick surface can cause his club to slide when the greens get extra slippery. As a result, Spieth liked to wet the bottom of his putter, either with his fingers or a wet towel, in order to gain more traction with the bottom of the club. But, is that legal?
During the third round of the World Golf Championships Cadillac Championship at Doral, the greens were getting slick and Spieth called over a rules official to check on the legality of wetting the putter in order to create stability. The official was stumped. Although Spieth said he never resorted to wetting the bottom of the putter in competition, he wanted to know if he could do so legally under the Rules of Golf.
“I’ve spoken to commentators, players and nobody knew the answer if you can do it,” he said. “I didn’t know if it was legal so I’ve never done it on the golf course [during a tournament round], so I asked an official once I knew the course was like that [on Saturday].”
Spieth did approach a rules official on the third hole at Doral with the question, “What my intentions ws his question. I told him to make it easier to set the putter down,”
After a review of the question by the rules staff, the answer came back to Spieth on the eighth hole. “It is a split on the decision,”
“So they called the [U.S. Golf Association] and he said that the USGA was going to talk about it further but for now we’re going to rule that you cannot do it.”
Playing it on the safe side, Spieth said he refrained from wetting the putter until he received an official ruling, which he did prior to the Masters.
How to work the ball with a fade or draw when you need to!

Learning how to hit a fade or draw at will can certainly take your game to the next level. The ability to move the ball in the air to either go around something like a tree or bush or to work the ball into a tough pin position definitely makes you a better player. Here, Travis Fulton, Director of Education for all TOUR Academy facilities and is Head Instructor for the PGA TOUR Golf Academy at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla., explains how to do this with the help of a hula hoop!
Having a stock ball flight will always be beneficial. If you are a drawer or fader of the golf ball, going back to that flight under pressure will give you the best results. However, you will benefit from having the ability to work the ball both directions.
Travis Fulton has an easy drill illustrated by using a hula hoop that will help you to visualize your club path through impact, thus allowing you to hit the ball straight, left-to-right and right-to-left.

There has been a lot of confusion on the term “releasing” the putter!
As Ted Norby, Director of Instruction at the National University Golf Academy, explains, there is no manipulation of either the hands or the forearms to do this. By holding the putter correctly, you can release the putter like a Tour Pro. Check it out!
A lot of golfers use too much wrist action while putting. They expect the club to move with their hands, instead of their forearms and shoulders.
If you are really looking to improve your short game around the greens, try this. Feel the weight of the club swing. Release the club with your forearms and DO NOT flip the hands or wrists. Also, try putting the weight of only four fingers on your club while practicing. It’s a great drill to get you from rolling over.

Some amazing shots pulled off with a golf club and a football! The final shot with a golf ball to a target in the middle of the playing field was better than a hole in one! Does this mean the Gamecock season is going to be “aces”? Let’s hope so!
Trick shots are awesome. Football is awesome. So, what do you get when you throw the famous trick shot duo, the Bryan Bros, together in a football stadium? You get some fun and creative trick shots! The last shot is impressive. I wonder how many takes it took them?
