The future of golf is in the hands of some pretty competent young golfers.

The “under 25-year-olds” are proving week after week that the next few years on the PGA Tour are going to be pretty exciting!  John Strege of Golf Digest’s “The Loop” gives us the inside story on golf’s youth and what to expect in the future.

It is a mistake to use television ratings as the sole arbiter in evaluating the strength of the game. Tiger Woods still piques the interest of Nielsen families. So do the Kardashians. So what?

Here’s a better metric: Since golf breathlessly awaited Tiger’s return at Augusta National, Jordan Spieth has won the Masters, Rory McIlroy has won the WGC-Cadillac Match Play and, on Sunday, the Wells Fargo Championship by seven, and Rickie Fowler won the Players Championship.

Golf's youth is so strong - Let's get ready to rumble!

Justin Thomas, Daniel Berger and now Patrick Rodgers, meanwhile, are all 22, potential stars and already asserting themselves. Patrick Reed is 24 and a four-time winner. “I think the amazing thing about this group of players is that we’ve come on tour and we’ve been ready to win from the start,” McIlroy said last week. “Jordan wins his first major at 21. Rickie got his first win here as I did, but he really elevated the status with that win last week [at the Players]. Patrick Reed as well.“A lot of guys have come out here and it hasn’t taken them long how to learn how to win. We don’t play maybe with as much fear.”

We all know about Babe Ruth’s legendary baseball career.

But, as I mentioned in an earlier post entitled Babe Ruth. The Sultan of Swing was quite a golfer, and, as it turned out, a good coach as well!

In addition to being a celebrity golf pioneer — oh, and probably the greatest baseball player ever — Babe Ruth is indirectly responsible for many good golf swings.  Have you ever seen a golfer tuck a glove or something under their arm during practice and hit balls? Probably. In fact, there’s a good chance you’ve tried it yourself on the range. Here’s the King of Practice, Vijay Singh, doing it.  Thanks to Golf Digest and The Loop for this informative article.

The money players earn in sport is mind-boggling!  Golf is no exception.

Jordan Spieth will earn the amount of money because his Master’s victory is even beyond his wildest dreams.  Jack Nicklaus won 18 majors, and Jordan will pass him in career earnings after two years on tour and one major Championship.  What does the future hold for young Spieth?  Ron Sirak, writing for Golf Digest, thinks that Jordan will rake it in, as he has believability (no one thinks this is a fluke), has won the Masters as his first major (huge), and he is a really nice, humble, good looking guy.  Read Ron’s take on Jordan’s future.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The jacket isn’t the only green Jordan Spieth will be taking home from Augusta National. The youngest major championship winner since Tiger Woods in 1997, the 21-year-old Spieth will see his off-course income more than triple as a result of his Masters victory, agents and analysts tell GolfDigest.com. Call him the $25 million man — at the very least.

And that spike in earnings power, plus his on-course winnings, will likely propel Spieth from No. 16 to the fifth spot in the annual Golf Digest 50 All-Encompassing money list next year.

Spieth includes among his endorsement partners Under Armour, AT&T, Titleist, Rolex, Perfect Sense Digital, NetJets and SuperStroke Grips. Last year, Spieth, who is represented by Jay Danzi of Lagardere Unlimited, made $12.3 million overall with about $6 million coming from off-course business deals. With $1.8 million for his Masters win, Spieth has already won nearly $5 million this year. And it’s only April.

Tiger Woods was No. 1 in the 2015 GD 50 money list with $54.5 million; Phil Mickelson No. 2 at $50.7 million; Rory McIlroy No. 3 with $49.2 million and 85-year-old Arnold Palmer No. 4 at $40 million. No. 5 was Jack Nicklaus with $22 million.

By slipping on the green jacket, Spieth will almost certainly leapfrog Nicklaus and 10 other players into that spot right behind the big four with off-course money alone nearing $20 million.

The victory for Spieth is worth so much because he hits all the benchmarks agents and endorsement partners are looking for.

First is believability. No one thinks this was a fluke. They believe there are more major victories in his future.

Augusta National’s driving range has some unwritten rules on Masters Week.

Max Adler of “The Loop” tells us that players are only allowed one additional person on the range with them, unlike a regular tour week.  Except if your name is Tiger Woods, then you can have more!

There are no agents, no equipment reps, no trainers, no writers, no TV people, nor any other species of pilot fish normally found clustered on ranges, usually texting or otherwise wasting their privilege with mindless pitter-patter.

OK, sometimes there’s an agent or a teacher, but mostly it’s just players and caddies at the Masters. With this unobstructed view a spectator can absorb more silky swings in five minutes than in a week on the course. There’s a roomy standing area set on an incline, and in front bleachers set in brick manned by a friendly usher.

“Everything’s a little different here, and that’s by design,” Robert Streb, one perceptive Masters rookie, says about the range. “It must be a really good experience for the fans.”
Augusta National's Driving Range is Unlike any Other.

But the specifics of that design aren’t entirely clear, at least among the people who stand under the big oak by the clubhouse and generally know what they’re talking about. “The soft rule is that a player can bring one person out to the range other than his caddie,” one player says. Except if you’re Tiger Woods and you want to bring both of your kids. Or if you show up with your agent and then your teacher happens to slide down from another student he’s been visiting.

You may only bring one date, but your dance card can have multiple slots, or so it seems.

Since the players have cellphones but the teachers may not, choreographing these little moments is a fraught endeavor.

“I’m here to work, so please, just let me have my phone, that’s all I ask,” says the coach of a multiple major champion.

“It’s the one week each year when teachers truly have to teach because they can’t have video cameras or launch monitors or any of that stuff,” one inveterate Masters attendee tells me. “They can take pictures, but that’s it.”

“That’s not true,” says the same coach as earlier, though with a touch of uncertainty or guilt. “I was out there filming some swings yesterday.”
“A player definitely can’t bring a launch monitor, that I’m sure of,” says a sales rep for a major equipment company.

But wasn’t Graeme McDowell using a Trackman Tuesday afternoon? “That must’ve been Augusta National’s Trackman. I think they now have one on the range and their own technician to run it. You’re allowed to use theirs, but not bring your own.”

“There’s no comparison. It’s far and away the best I’ve ever seen,” says J.B. Holmes, winner of last week’s Shell Houston Open.

“The fairway on the right is a replica of the first hole so you can practice your opening tee shot. And the wedge green behaves exactly like the greens on the course so you can see how the ball is spinning and reacting, which is all we really want.”

And the patrons can see these shots, too, which is all they really want. When there are no rules, the only rule is don’t do anything that will detract from it being the greatest in the world.

I agree with Calloway and Dude Perfect that this cool video is worth watching TO THE END!

The Bryan Brothers appear in my post entitled “Bryan Brothers of SC are getting our attention!” and show off their crafty golf skills.

But are there any women doing trick shots?  How about the San Diego State Univ. Women’s golf team? They entertain with some great teamwork, and they mix it up with some non-golf athletics also.
This trick shot video featuring the San Diego State University women’s golf team is so good it’s guaranteed to make you forget about all the other SDSU Aztecs teams for a minute.

Recently I received a lot of ‘LIKES’ for my post entitled “Your Worst Shot Can’t Beat this – The art of Tunneling.”

That made me realize, again, just how much humor is integral to the game of golf. It is not an easy sport, and even the Pros have demonstrated how easy it is to look foolish. Remember Woody Austin doing a face-plant into the water at Royal Montreal in the 2007 President’s Cup Matches.

But, of course, we see many more examples of the weekend golfer looking, ahem…. a tad inelegant.

Watch this poor guy try to emulate Tiger Wood’s shot while Woods sat outside of a bunker at the 2012 British Open as supplied by golfdigest.com and The Loop!
