The PGA Pros play with equipment that is customized specifically for them; I get that.

I do clubfitting myself for the average golfers that come through my school.  It makes a big difference in their games.  But to have a putter made pretty much from scratch to fit your putting stroke?  That is way cool!  Here is the process of how they made Jason Day’s putter, video, and all brought to us by  John Holmes of PGA.com. Don’t forget to go to the video link below the picture as well.

Jason Day has no sightline on his putter.

Welding the hosel into the proper position is a key part of the construction of Jason Day’s TaylorMade Itsy Bitsy Spider putter.

Jason Day could probably sink putts with a monkey wrench these days.

Still, the fact is that he’s won three of his last four starts – the RBC Canadian Open, the PGA Championship, and the Barclays – with a prototype model of TaylorMade’s Ghost Itsy Bitsy Spider mallet.
Earlier today, TaylorMade posted a video that shows how its technicians build Day’s putter from scratch. It is definitely worth the 152 seconds it’ll cost you to watch it.
TaylorMade describes the putter as an Itsy Bitsy Japan model with the hosel cut off.  They then hand-weld a #3 short slant neck onto the head. Day prefers no sightline, TaylorMade says, so the technicians hand-weld in the existing line and buff the top until it’s smooth. They then coat the head with a custom acrylic to give it its grey finish.

I will be upfront here and say that I am a Mizuno Clubfitter, and I play Mizuno Clubs.

That being said, I have always (long before my association with Mizuno) admired Mizuno for the great irons that have always been produced through the years!  Their new 850 Driver is also the best driver they have ever produced, but that is for another day!

I personally put these Mizuno MP 25’s in my bag.  I cannot say enough about them!  They are the best irons I have ever had in my bag!  I guess I won’t be replacing my clubs any time soon! Come and visit me at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.  We are about half an hour south of Myrtle Beach, SC.  Set up a personal clubfitting with me for the entire Mizuno line – they have models for all handicap levels, as you will see in the video below!

When an inventor or golf swing guru comes up with a new idea, they think, “I will tell everyone about my new idea, and they will all thank me for such a great invention/design/swing!”

Unfortunately, not all ideas/inventions/swings work out!  But if we didn’t get these crazy ideas, we would never get the great ideas. So, thank you to all the inventors/people who design/swing gurus out there, and thank you to Golf Swing by Swing for bringing us such an entertaining article!

We all know the story of the emperor and his new clothes – it is about a king who is is foolish enough to think that the suit of clothes he is wearing are the best thing since sliced bread. Only the “tailor” who made them hadn’t actually given him any clothes at all and he was walking around in his birthday suit. The thing is that everybody was frightened to tell him, so they all went along the deal, telling him his new clothes were fabulous. Eventually, somebody had the courage to speak up.

There are times in real life when somebody or something is held up as the person or object that is going to change our lives. The truth can be very different, as we will see…

TASSELED GOLF SHOES

10 Overrated Ideas in the Golf Industry - #6 is my Favorite!

What on earth were we thinking about? Millions of golfers went out and bought them, trying to convince themselves that they looked good.

Let’s get something straight – they did not look good and they convinced all non-golfers that those of us who played the game had taken leave of our senses. And they were right!

THE CHIPPER

10 Overrated Ideas in the Golf Industry - #6 is my Favorite!

Come on, be honest – stick your hands up if you have ever had a chipper in your golf bag.

It was an abomination of a club.  The chipper had it’s uses,  by people that didn’t know any better. Watching people trying to get the ball over a bunker with a chipper was worth the price of the green fee on its own.

Watching them try to escape from a bunker had to be one of the funniest sights known to man.

THE PIZZA-SIZED GOLF HOLE

10 Overrated Ideas in the Golf Industry - #6 is my Favorite!

This is a new one on the market, with a design to attract new players. Now you can call me an old-fashioned traditionalist if you want, but isn’t the point of the game to get a small ball into a hole that is only slightly bigger?

You can quote me on this – Bobby Jones will be turning in his grave.

If you want a bigger hole, go and play basketball. If this catches on, I will run down the 18th fairway of the Old Course at St Andrews

THE BUBBLE SHAFT

10 Overrated Ideas in the Golf Industry - #6 is my Favorite!

TaylorMade told us that it was the future of golf shafts. For years we had been told all golf shafts had to taper, thick at the grip end, and growing thinner towards the hosel. And for years, it worked.

But suddenly TaylorMade came up with a graphite shaft fitted to drivers and fairway woods that featured, well, a bubble in the middle of the shaft. There appeared to be no logic to it, but millions of us went out and bought them. And then it disappeared from the market and we all wondered why we had bothered.

Check out the other  4 overrated ideas here.

Mizuno has long been known for producing the best irons in the golf industry.

I play Mizuno irons and recommend them to all of my students, from beginner to low handicap.

A few years ago, Mizuno created woods, but they were eclipsed by TaylorMade and Callaway woods. Update to present: the Mizuno driver has evolved into the ‘hot gear’ zone. Check out this video with Rick Shiels, PGA Pro, at Trafford Golf Center in Manchester, UK, discussing the new customizable Mizuno JPX 850 driver.

I recently went out to give a playing lesson with one of my tour players who plays on the Canadian Tour.

In checking my golf bag, I saw that I was low on golf balls.  Not having the time to get to the store to get a new box, I went to my wife’s bag and took a sleeve of balls from her bag.  Only once I had got to the tee did I notice that they were Lady Precepts made by Bridgestone.  As this was a playing lesson about my student and not about me, I decided just to play with them.

WOW – what an eye-opener.  I hit this ball about 20 yards further than I hit my regular ball.  This continued throughout the round.  So when I saw this video with Phil Mickelson talks about the new softball from Calloway called the Chrome Soft, I thought that this would be worth a try for those of you looking for some extra yardage.

I know, I know, Phil gets paid to promote Callaway.  But, I think any of the “soft” brands are worth looking into.  Test them out to see if they work for your game.

As golfers get older (like myself), we start to lose distance.  I started to notice this after my 60th birthday.

I lost about half a club.  By my 64th birthday, I had lost a full club.  BUT, I am still scoring exactly the same.  My handicap has not gone up because of my distance loss.  WHY?  Because I now concentrate on my wedge game and my putting.  I have managed to maintain a 1.3 index even though I do not play a lot of golf these days due to a hectic teaching schedule. (thank heavens)  Whether you have lost distance or not, good wedge play can really make a difference, and the right wedges in your bag can facilitate that.

Why 4 wedges?

It allows me versatility and with a 4-degree difference between clubs, and gives me superior distance control.

John Diekmann, writing for http://www.golfdashblog.com, gives his experience with a new Mizuno Wedge.

How 4 wedges in your bag can make a huge difference!

4 Mizuno MP-T5 wedges! 60, 56, 52, and 48 degrees.

First, my disclaimer; I play Mizuno irons (paid for with my own money) and love them. Most every golf club reviewer remarks on the wonderful feel of Mizuno forged irons because of the steel they use and their Grain Flow technology. I won’t try to explain why it works, but it creates a great feeling club face and you’ll know it as soon as you hit one flush.

Mizuno’s new MP-T5 wedge series uses the same forging process and then adds what they call Quad Cut grooves and 5 different sole grinds. Mizuno actually varies the width and depth of the grooves on their wedges based on the loft. It all adds up to something special that opened my eyes and pleasantly changed my game.

Let me give you a little background.

I’ve been playing a mixed bunch of wedges for a long time. I’ve got a Titleist that’s probably 20 years old, a Cleveland that’s at least 12 years old and a Ping that’s around 8 years old. I like all of them and was well pleased with their performance. I never considered that I needed to upgrade UNTIL Mizuno sent me a 54 degree MP-T5 with 8 degrees of bounce.

What’s really different about this wedge and what I already own is the grind and the grooves. If you read a lot about clubs and technology, then you know that tour pros have been ‘grinding’ their wedges for a long time. But that’s for the pros, right? We amateurs don’t need and wouldn’t appreciate it. WRONG!

The engineers at Titleist explain how the dimples on a golf ball help the ball fly higher and further.

They illustrate how a golf ball with no dimples will not fly very well at all.  It will travel like a knuckleball in baseball, literally diving to the ground almost on contact!  By using their “Iron Byron” golf swing simulator, which produces an exact swing time after time, the Titleist can experiment with various dimple configurations to design the next generation of golf balls that will simply fly like the wings of a dove!

What makes your golf ball go straighter and farther? Dimples of course! And in this video, Titleist designers show how important dimple technology is for improving all of our golf games.

Can Kaenon Sunglasses improve your golf – What do you think?

Golf Chats is a website to encourage discussions on various subjects relating to the game of golf. Most golfers know that it is essential to protect your eyes from the sun, particularly in summer, with heightened UVA and UVB rays exposure.

And definitely, protection is necessary if you take medications that can cause photosensitivity.

A lot of us, in the past, didn’t wear sunglasses because we felt that we just couldn’t see the ball clearly enough when putting, searching for a lost ball, etc. Sometimes we wore them between shots, but that’s not good enough, folks.

Take the advice provided by David Hilgart for Fairways and Greens! At beavergolf.blogspot.com/.

David introduces Kaenon eyewear, a small player in an enormous market. Kaenon Hard Kore SR-91 lenses combine superior sharpness and clarity, lightweight durability, unmatched impact resistance, and anti-glare properties. SR-91 resists the scratches that are evident with other sunglasses, and the quality of vision must be seen to be believed. Despite Hilgart’s doubts, he tried them for one hole, from tee to green, and has never since played a round without them. Some of the many Tour Players who wear Kaenon sunglasses are Carl Pettersson, Brian Gay, Christina Kim, Pat Perez, and Carin Koch.

Can Kaenon Sunglasses improve your golf - What do you think?

Kaenon Hard Core Sunglasses are as Stylish as they are good!

Golf is a simple game. A ball, a club, and a hole are all that is needed to play it.

Despite that simplicity, today’s golfer makes use of a plethora of tools, devices, and aids to play better and find more joy in the game. Specialized clubs, and advances in ball composition allow us to play longer and straighter shots. Supple and tacky gloves both protect our hands and offer better grip in humid and rainy weather. We fill our highly engineered bags with low friction tees, futuristic divot tools, all manner of ball markers, electrolyte replenishing sports drinks, and gust-busting oversized umbrellas.

While any number of these extras can add comfort and enjoyment to the game, there are a handful of items that can actually help maintain your good health, and allow you to play the game of golf longer, and enjoy your life off the course more comfortably as well. If you regularly walk the course through your rounds, proper footwear, and a well made push cart can save wear and tear on your shoulders, back, hips, and knees.

Some good insect repellent can save you from unnecessary itching and scratching. Perhaps as important as anything, however, is to protect yourself from that seemingly ever present sun. Scientific consensus is that the UV rays sent out by our life giving star can cause irreversible damage to both our skin and our eyes. You should be protecting your skin with all varieties of sunscreens available on the market today, as well as a good hat with a brim, even covering the ears if you can stomach the look. For this post, let’s focus on your eyes.

Can Kaenon Sunglasses improve your golf – What do you think?

Though I assume that most of us are aware that the sun can hurt our eyes,

I still see a great number of golfers ignoring the protection that sunglasses can provide, and until very recently, you could count me among them. American Academy of Opthamology advice about sunglasses includes wearing them anytime you are outside, but particularly during the summer months due to heightened exposure to UVA and UVB rays, and when taking medications that can cause photosensitivity, among others.

Advice on what to look for in a pair of sunglasses includes blocking at least 99% of all UV light (UVB is considered more dangerous than UVA to skin and eyes), impact resistance, polarization, and wraparound style. I have known these facts for years, yet when it came time to wear sunglasses during my rounds, I shunned them for the most part. I found that when I had them on I had a very hard time seeing the ball, even right there in front of me.

The result was that if I wore sunglasses at all, I would wear them in between shots, removing them during my swing.

When searching for a lost ball, and most importantly, always while reading putts. I have worn several brands, but most often Oakley and Sundog, never finding a lens that was right enough to wear through the round. That search ended about a month ago when I played wearing my first pair of Kaenon Hard Kore sunglasses.

Founded in 2001 by Steve and Darren Rosenberg, Kaenon is still a small player in an enormous market. Committed to making the finest quality eyewear available anywhere in the world, Kaenon continues to fight a strong battle against worldwide conglomerate Luxottica, which owns brands ranging from Oakley, Ray-Ban, and Revo to Sunglass Hut, Lens Crafters, and Pearle Vision. While buying a higher end Luxottica brand might not get you much more for your dollar than one of their lower end brands, with Kaenon, you will always get exactly what you are paying for.

Can Kaenon Sunglasses improve your golf - What do you think?

Check out this dramatic difference without polarized sunglasses.
