Phil Mickelson is, in my opinion, the best player in the world around the green. I think Jordan Spieth is a half a step behind him. So watch the master as he shows you how to use trajectory to help get the ball close around the green, even when the lie is not that great! The high shot out of the rough requires a slightly different technique than the regular flop or lob shot. Check it out here! Thanks to Swing by Swing and GolfSwingVideoTips for sharing.
The ability to get up and down is the difference between good players salvaging pars and average players making sloppy bogeys.
Missed greens are a part of life on the golf course. But the ability to get up and down is the difference between good players salvaging pars and average players making sloppy bogeys or double bogeys. Straight forward shots from the fairway or short rough predictably result in a higher percentage of success, but where a player can really separate his or herself is from the gnarly lies just off the green.
Phil Mickelson, one of the greatest short game players in the history of the sport, shows you the subtle, yet imperative adjustments you need to make to use trajectory to stop the ball when spin is not an option.

One of the questions that I am asked most when teaching the short game is, “When do I chip, flop, or bump and run?”
Well, the answer is a little more complex than that. Around the green, you have 5 options. You can chip, landing the ball on the green and letting it roll towards the flag. Or you can pitch, which means flying the ball a little higher to get the ball to stop after a couple of yards of roll.
You can hit the flop shot, which means taking a very lofted club, opening the face, and making the ball stop with almost no roll. Or you can hit the “bump and run” shot, which means you would land the ball short of the green and let it roll on. And finally, if the surface allows, you can putt the ball. Two of these shots are described by Holly Taylor via pga.com. Holly explains how to determine when to hit these shots.
Watch golf instruction for how to choose between a bump-and-run or a flop shot. PGA Professional Holly Taylor explains the strategy and tips for how to be successful at both shots.

Phil Mickelson once hit a flop shot from the back of the 15th green at the Masters in the final round when the pin position was near the front left of the green. Phil hit this beautiful, soft flop that landed like a butterfly with sore feet about 3 feet from the pin and stopped. I jumped right out of my chair! That was one of the greatest shots I have ever seen and Phil is the only one on the planet who would have the cahones to hit that shot at that moment in time! Thanks to Callaway Golf and Whitley Golf for sharing Phil’s insights in this highly instructional video!
