Everyone who golfs should have a handicap. I was surprised to learn that less than 20% of USA golfers have one.
Owning a handicap lets you play in tournaments, which brings a fun new element to your golf experience. It also stimulates your goal setting. Whether you are a 36 handicapper aiming to reach 29, or you’re a 15 trying to get to a single digit, the reward you feel when you reach your goal is fantastic.

Some people tell me they haven’t acquired a handicap because the USGA charges them for it and makes the process seem difficult.

And get ready to take on the world!

This is not a golf video (although there is one brief putt), but this is a story.

I would like to share with everyone who is struggling, not only with your golf game but life in general.  At home, at work, maybe things are not perfect.  And they never will be!  Perfection is what you make of it in your mind.  Nick James was born with Tetra-amelia syndrome, a rare disorder that left him with no arms or legs.  And yet, he has accomplished more than most people with two arms, and two legs have ever accomplished!  He has proved that you can do anything you put your mind to!

So next time you are on the golf course and you hit a bad shot and want to slam your club into the ground or toss it down the fairway, let your thoughts go to Nick James, and be thankful that you can walk around a beautiful golf course and have the ability to even swing a golf club!

The handicap system allows golfers of all skill levels to compete on an equal basis.

A handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer’s potential playing ability, based on the tees he or she plays from on a given course.  Someone who has an 18 handicap is generally expected to play a full round of golf with approximately 18 over par.  A handicap index makes sure these golfers compete equally even if they have received their handicaps from different courses.

The Original Rules of Golf.

Each course is designated a “Slope Rating” from each tee.  This indicates the difficulty of the course.  The higher the Slope Rating, the more difficult the course.  If a player from an easy course with a low Slope rating goes over to play with a friend who is a member of a more challenging course, with a higher Slope rating, even though their handicaps might be the same, in this instance, the player from the more challenging course would have to give the player from the easier course one or even two additional shots in the match.
