To increase swing speed, you need fast muscle twitch!

You can create a fast muscle twitch by practicing alternately with heavy resistance and then a light resistance alternating for about 2 or 3 reps.  Doing this daily will definitely increase your body rotation, lag, and clubhead speed.

Ken Pierce of Golf Gym got some inspiration from Phil Mickelson recently, who also does this drill.  Ken demonstrates using Power Swing Plus. He then uses a club turned upside down for his speed drill.  I would tend to replace that with the Orange Whip, something I use regularly.  Pretty soon, I will purchase the Power Swing Plus, and along with my Orange Whip, will do these drills every day of the week for 30 days!  Watch for my report back at that time and tell you whether I have noticed an increase in distance.  Stay tuned!

If you arrive at the course just in time for your tee time but have five minutes to spare before you tee off, try this stretch demonstrated by Ken Pierce of Golfgym.com. It uses all the “golf-specific” muscles in your torso and upper body.  As Ken is using, instead of the car, use the golf cart as you wait on the first tee before your round begins.  You won’t be sorry!

You may very well be the exception, but even though we know better, golfers in general, do not like to properly get ready before playing or practicing. Frankly, only a small percentage of golfers even take the time to practice, let alone beforehand.

There are so many articles, TV programs, coaches and trainers with different ideas on the proper way to get ready for a round of golf that it can be quite puzzling as to what to do first. There are different methods of stretching as well.

Static stretching is where you get into a position and hold it for 10 to 15 seconds.

This type of stretching has been found to actually slow down your fast twitch muscles that are critical to performing a fast golf swing. “Dynamic” means your body is continuously moving during the stretch. It is generally more golf specific because it should involve a twisting or swinging motion. Dynamic stretching is also better because it helps to warm up the muscles that will be used throughout the round.

Your Golf Skill Level is not Determined by your Waistline!

I have met people in my professional life who have bodies that are far from what we see as “athletic.”

However, some of these people are awesome golfers and I can never forget the first American I ever met.  I was an assistant golf professional at Royal Johannesburg Golf Club and we had a large rotund member by the name of Sam Mc Cready.  Sam was a +2 handicap!  So yes, fitness is important for longevity and healthy life, but definitely not a requirement for good golf!  Ken Pierce of golfgym.com points out two super players.  One on the European Tour and one on the LPGA Tour who lacks an athletic body, yet has climbed to the top of their profession showing incredible golf skills!

Congratulations to Inbee Park & Kiradech Aphibarnrat on their wins this past weekend! Inbee Park is the World #1 Woman Player, and won her 7th Major Championship, the Ricoh Women’s British Open on Sunday. Kiradech Aphibarnrat is from Thailand and won his second European Tour title of the year on Sunday when he beat Robert Karlsson on the final hole to clinch the Paul Lawrie Matchplay.

These golfers are two great examples of, and make my point that, GOLF FITNESS IS NOT MEASURED BY YOUR WAISTLINE. Golf Fitness is based on your performance on the golf course. It is based on your ability to perform golf shots consistently and repeatedly…not whether you have six pack abs.

Your Golf Skill Level is not Determined by your Waistline!

Someone reading this post might think that I am being insensitive to these two young golfers. Actually, my theory that Golf Fitness is not measured by your waistline could not be more valid than for these two professional golfers.
