I was interested in Dr. Greg Rose’s take on the criticism Johnny Miller churned out about Rory’s training regimen and that he worked out for vanity reasons!  Johnny, you should educate yourself before making statements that make you look foolish!  Dr. Rose is one of the highest experts in his field and is respected by the entire golf community.  I read some of the comments on Dr. Rose’s video on FaceBook and am appalled by the lack of knowledge apparent in many PGA professionals who presume to know more than Dr. Rose.  What this video and make your own decisions! Thanks, Dr. Rose of MyTPI, for this enlightening video and for explaining the facts as even I can understand!

According to Mark Brodie, whose book “Every Shot Counts” presents a new way of measuring stats.  Driving distance is more important than driving accuracy.  The old way of measuring driving prowess was “Fairways Hit,” which Mark Brodie proved wrong.  Brodie found that the long hitters had a distinct advantage over the shorter hitters even though, the shorter hitters hit more fairways.  Golf Digest Stix gives us the best drivers on the PGA Tour who lead in “Strokes Gained Driving.”  As you can see, they all hit the ball a long way.  What does this mean to you, the average golfer?  Go to the range and work on hitting the ball further, not straighter!

PGA Tour: Stat Leaders

Nearly every major championship puts a premium on driving the ball well.  But it’s even more so at Oakmont Country Club for this week’s U.S. Open. The course is not only long—avoiding the long, thick rough makes distance and accuracy off the tee critical to contend. In 2007 Angel Cabrera averaged 310.9 yards off the tee (ranked second for the week) and hit enough fairways to rank T-3 in greens in regulation. Look for a similar performance from this year’s champion, with the following five players—who rank at the top of the PGA Tour’s strokes gained/off the tee category—among the most likely candidates.

1. Rory McIlroy. Strokes gained/off-the-tee: 1.227 Driver: Nike Vapor Fly Pro, 9.5 degrees

Who are the best drivers on Tour and what equipment do they use?

Few players on tour can match McIlroy’s prowess off the tee. The four-time major winner uses a 45.25-inch Nike Vapor Fly Pro driver set at 9.5 degrees with a Mitsubishi Diamana S+ 70 XTS shaft and Golf Pride New Decade Multi-Compound ribbed white/black grip. Prior to this year’s Northern Trust Open in February, McIlroy (above) adjusted the loft of his driver plus 1 degree (from 8.5 to 9.5 degrees) in order to create more spin to help him draw the ball more.

2. Bubba Watson. Strokes gained/off-the-tee: 1.087 Driver: Ping G, 7.5 degrees

Who are the best drivers on Tour and what equipment do they use?

As one would expect with an individual as unique as Watson, his Ping G driver isn’t exactly standard-issue. For starters, the 9-degree pink clubhead is set at 7.5 degrees, and the “dragonfly” technology on the crown (areas where the crown is made thinner) is black. Though one of the tour’s longest hitters, the True Temper Grafalloy BiMatrx x-flex shaft (which is graphite with a steel tip section) is on the short end of the spectrum at 44.5 inches, which Watson says offers him greater control of his tee shots. The grip is oversize with 11 wraps of tape on the top and 13 wraps on the bottom, set 10 degrees open. Watson will use this club as he tries to improve on his fifth-place showing at Oakmont in 2007.

Being a good driver of the ball requires an understanding of good fundamentals.  This means knowing what your body must do to deliver the clubface square to the ball at impact, with the clubhead path moving along the target line.  To help you understand the process even better, here is , with help from Ron Kaspriske and Golf Digest photographer , to bringing you 5 things you MUST do to be a consistent driver of the golf ball!
5 Important fundamentals for Driving the ball like Rory!

It’s important to have swing thoughts on the tee. They help take your mind off all the bad things that can happen and put your focus on what you need to do to put one in the fairway.

Way down the fairway. But just as important as mechanical thoughts is making sure you’re swinging with good tempo, particularly with the driver. You could have amazing technique, but if you can’t put it all together with the right rhythm, you won’t hit your best tee shots. So let’s start there as we try to make this your Year of the Driver.

You might notice I’m wearing in-ear headphones. I like to listen to music when I practice to help improve my rhythm. I tend to get a little quick in the transition from backswing to downswing, especially as tournaments get closer to Sunday and I’ve got a chance to win. Listening to music helps throttle back my tempo. I’m not talking about upbeat hip-hop or some Celtic metal band. I need something a little more mellow when I hit balls: acoustic stuff like Coldplay’s older music, Ed Sheeran, Bon Iver.

My first tip for you is to find the rhythm that produces good, solid strikes over and over. It’s probably less violent than the swing you’d instinctively make. Keep rehearsing with the driver until you feel smooth from start to finish. Then, go back to the swing thoughts that click for you. I’ll share some of the things I’m working on with my driver to get ready for the Masters. If you want this to be your Year of the Driver, I think they can help.—With Ron Kaspriske

5 Important fundamentals for Driving the ball like Rory!

CREATE YOUR FOUNDATION
Stability is important in any athletic movement, but it’s absolutely critical when you want to swing your driver with more power. There’s never a point in my swing when I feel like I’m losing control of my body. Even when I’m swinging my fastest and really firing into the ball, I know I’m going to stay in balance. Watch my swing, and you’ll see how quiet I am at the finish.

It starts with getting into a comfortable, tension-free position at address (above), but one where you feel free to swing the club with some speed. That delicate blend of being relaxed and ready to move at high speeds is something to focus on when practicing. The stance is key. If there’s too much weight out on your toes or back on your heels, you’re starting from an unstable position. Feel that your legs are solidly under you.

In recent years, there has been a lot of talk on the type of workouts some of the PGA Tour players are going through in the gym.

With Tiger Woods being beset with so many injuries, some say that working with weights is detrimental to the body, especially when relating to a good golf swing’s smooth, fluid motion.  In recent weeks Brandel Chamblee, who is known for his outspoken manner, sometimes to his detriment, has criticized Rory McIlroy for his workouts.  There now seems to be a minor war between the two, with Rory tweeting some workout pictures to Brandel. Personally, I feel that if Brandel had worked out a little more in the gym, he might have done better as a professional golfer.  Thanks to  of Golf Digest for this article.  I’m sure we have not heard the last of this!

Is working with weights harmful to your game - some think so!

Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee gets credit for raising an interesting question — Is there’s such a thing as too muchstrength training for golfers? Specifically, he asked if Rory McIlroy’s intense fitness routines might have damaging effects, especially when you consider Tiger Woods also put in countless hours working out and has since been beset by a series of injuries.

“It does give me a little concern when I see the extensive weightlifting that Rory is doing in the gym,” Chamblee told reporters in a conference call.

The comments provided some amusing fodder for McIlroy, who replied to Chamblee by tweeting a video of him doing squats. But the question remained: Is the four-time major champion doing more harm than good?

To listen to a podcast with Golf Digest’s fitness editor Ron Kaspriske about whether Brandel Chamblee’s points are valid, go here!

Is Brooks Koepka the new long hitter on Nike’s Staff?

Brooks Koepka was ranked #4 in Driving Distance on the PGA Tour in 2015.  Tony Finau was #2.  Rory McIlroy has strong competition on the Nike Staff now that these two bombers have been signed to join him in playing their equipment in 2016!  Michelle Wie is also one of the longer hitters on the LPGA.  Nike’s slogan should be changed from “Just do it!” to “Just hit it!”

Thanks to  of Golf Digest for the story!

If you’re Nike Golf, and you have Rory McIlroy and Michelle Wie sporting the swoosh (not to mention the sidelined Tiger Woods), your brand visibility is already pretty strong. Still, the addition of Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau, a pair of rising stars on the PGA Tour signed to new equipment endorsements on Monday, doesn’t hurt.

Koepka (above), who had been with Titleist, is coming off breakthrough 2014-’15 season that saw him win at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and earn more than $3.5 million, helping his rise to his current 16th spot in the World Ranking. The 25-year-old also ranked eighth in driving distance while averaging 308.2 yards off the tee.

If you are a golfer with high swing speed then this is the shoe for you!

Rory McIlroy was an integral part of the design and I must admit it is a pretty cool looking shoe.  So even those of you that don’t have high swings speeds but like a little fashion, select stores will have them in stock on December 1, 2015.  They will debut on nike.com on November 27th.  Thanks to golfunfiltered.com for letting us know in time for the release!

Rory McIlroy’s golf swing is a thing of violent beauty. With swing speeds reaching over 120 MPH, Rors must establish a solid foundation in his lower body to handle the force he exerts on his golf club.

Nike Golf built the new Nike Lunar Control 4 golf shoes for this purpose, which Rory will be wearing at his upcoming tournament in Dubai.

Guys like Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, and Michael Phelps would love to excel at golf.

Stars in their own sports admit that golf presents the biggest challenge of all sports for them to reach that goal.

Recently, Rory McIlroy joined Ireland’s National Rugby Team to give some tips on golf to the guys. Luke Fitzgerald is one of the team’s top players and is a very imposing figure with his size and his fitness level.

Will that translate into Fitzgerald hitting a powerful one off the tee?  Golf can at times be the most hilarious sport!

The PGA Tour does not discuss the disciplinary action they take with their players.  So it came as quite a surprise when Rory mentioned in a recent story that because he had apologized during an interview after the Cadillac Championship, for throwing his club, the PGA Tour had reduced the fine by $20,000!  Some guys get all the luck!

Remember back in March at the WGC-Cadillac Championship when Rory McIlroy threw his club into the water after his approach shot at the par-5 fifth hole found the hazard? Well, in a recent interview with ESPN, McIlroy revealed that the apology he gave following his round ended up saving him $20,000.

“The fine was reduced from $25,000 to $5,000 because I said I was sorry in the TV interview afterward,” McIlroy was quoted saying.

Here’s the video of the club toss:
